5 Dos and Don'ts of Thought Leadership Marketing - Entrepreneur

Gone are the days when marketing meant putting out some advertisements and hiring a copywriter to rave about how great your brand is.In a technology-saturated age where consumers are more skeptical than ever of self-promotion, traditional advertising strategies just dont work anymore.

Thats why many entrepreneurs are interested in the new value of thought leadership. If youve been privy to trends in marketing over the past few years, youve almost certainly heard the term being thrown around at least a few times. But thought leadership is more than just the latest marketing fad -- it's more of a philosophy that's probably here to stay.In essence, thought leadership is about providing genuine value to your customers without even a hint of self-promotion --showing them that youre the no. 1 expert in your field -- somebody who is 100 percentworthy of their trust.

The idea is that people are more willing to invest in you if they are confidentthat you really know your stuff. ut positioning yourself as a thought leader isnt easy -- and if the terminology is new to you, it can be hardto know where to start.

Thought leadership expert Danielle Sabrina offers five dos and donts for those who want to implement thought leadership into their marketing plan:

1. Show, dont tell.

The point of thought leadership is to demonstrateyour expertise, not simply talkabout it. Your trophy cabinet may be impressive, but its important to show how youve earned your accolades.

If youre an expert in Facebook advertising, dont just talk about how much you know. Write an in-depth article (or twoor three) tackling specific issues in the world of Facebook ads.Not only will be people be more interested in reading an article that could help them, but youll earn their trust by showing the proof of the pudding.

2. Provide, dont promote.

From spam emails to pyramid schemes to Nigerian princes who always seem to have millions of dollars to offer you, people are more skeptical than ever of online advertising. No matter how much you try to disguise an advertisement, dont underestimate the general publics ability to sniff out promotion from miles away.

Thats why you should focus on being a genuine resource for potential customers. Your emails, social media channelsand blog posts should constitute a gold mine of useful, actionable content for anyone interested in your field. This will encourage people to revisit your site, check out your other materialand sign up for your email list.

3. Depth, not breadth.

Dig deep. Being a thought leader doesnt mean knowing everything about every aspect of your field. Its about being the go-to person in your particular niche, which can be very narrow.

A single detailed, statistics-backed blog post will take you much farther than 10 vague, general ones. Instead of mass-producing articles to provide a constant stream of content, shift your focus and energy to creating thorough, comprehensive content that deals with a specific problem. This will drive traffic to your site and differentiate you from the thousands of similar sites on the internet.

4. Analyze, dont assume.

You might think you know what people want to know about, but the truth might surprise you. Often times, we get so caught up in our fields that we lose sight of what our clients --rather than our peers --want to know. Pay attention to your customers. Take note of what theyre asking on your social channels, and respond to their questions. Interview them to see whats working for themand what theyd like to see more of.

In addition to showing that you value your customers, this can give you ideas for your next blog post, social media postor product.

5. Open a dialogue, not a monologue.

As Sabrina says, The idea is not to interrupt the conversation, but become part of it. After all, youre not the only participant in your field. Engage with your peers, and dont be afraid to share their content if it could be of use to your customer base.

Being connected in your field can open up opportunities for collaboration and help you reach a broader audience. Further, it provides additional proof that youre current and up-to-date about the status quo in your area of expertise.Think of the people whose opinions you trust. Did they gain this trust by trumpeting their skills, continually telling you how great and talented they are?Probably not. Its much more likely that they earned your trust by repeatedly showing their expertise, sharing their knowledgeand providing valuable information to you and others.

Thats the big concept behind thought leadership marketing. In the words of Sabrina, "Thought leadership marketing is not just about selling your product or service. It's also not about telling the world your company is the best. It's about sharing value and being a resource.

When done correctly, thought leadership marketing builds rapport with your customer base without coming off as fake and self-promotional; it allows you to present yourself as a true expert that people trust.

And in the end, earning trust means earning business. Simply showing off your skills isnt enough anymore. Today, consumers demand proof, and thought leadership is an excellent way to provide it.

Google Fiber drops free basic service in its original city - Engadget

It's odd for Google to yank an offering like this, but Recode suggests that this could reflect a broader change in strategy. Simply put, Google has fiercer competition from incumbent carriers -- it may have to offer a fast-but-affordable selection to get those customers for whom the gigabit option is either too costly or sheer overkill. On top of that, dropping the installation cost (it's waived for everyone if you commit to one year) increases the chances that Google Fiber will reach apartments, where any kind of initial fee might be too much. Whatever the motivations, Google is clearly beyond the days when Fiber was merely an experiment in very high-speed internet access -- it has to be a money-maker.

Web Design Tips To Help You

It can sometimes seem difficult to even think about entering into the world of web design. Yet you shouldn't let the world alone discourage you from trying to pursue and endeavors that you feel like you can profit from. The tips in this article can help you understand some of the key aspects of web design.

Make sure the code you write has a valid HTML+CSS if you're designing a website. Although most browsers can make sense of code that isn't valid, it could be rendered correctly or incorrectly. Valid code will render the same way most of the time in modern browsers. You can check the validity of your HTML code with an HTML validator.

Try to keep current with information related to webdesign. Internet forums are a great place to visit for this information. Everything is right there on the world wide web. You simply have to take the time to look.

Be wary of web hosting companies who claim that they offer unlimited bandwidth to their customers. Usually there is something that is written in the small print that is far different than that. In many cases people end up having problems when it comes to fair use policies.

Don't use splash pages for your site unless required by law, and especially don't use a Flash intro. Most people just want to get to your content as quickly as possible, and don't care to look at useless splash pages. Integrate it into the homepage instead if you have some amusing content that you absolutely want visitors to see.

Do you have a bunch of different website ideas? You'll want to grab those domain names right away if so. Use your creativity and imagination when doing this. You never know when someone else is thinking about the same name and type of website as you. With hundreds of millions of sites on the web, you simply cannot wait and assume others did not have the same idea.

Keep your front page as simple as possible. People surfing the web will quickly decide if they are going to delve into a website based on the front page. Blow the horn about your business and its unique qualities, but reduce the amount of extra fluff on your site.

To help you design a website that is free of clutter, do not include any scrolling text on your site. Websites that have things constantly moving back and forth on the screen is really distracting to the visitor. Not only is this distracting and annoying, it screams unprofessional and will cause your visitors to leave quickly.

Make sure your business logo is well-designed and prominently on every page of your site. Your logo is a key component of your brand, and it should be one of the first things people see when they go to your website. There are design firms that will make you one at relatively low cost if you can't come up with a good idea for a logo.

Keep your education ongoing. Websites are constantly changing, every day, and if you stop learning new things, you may find yourself falling behind the pack with your designs. Try to convince yourself to learn one new thing each day, be it programming a new background, or a simple HTML setup.

Watch the amount of flashy multimedia that is on your site. Don't overdo it with a bunch of "extras". These may make it difficult for visitors to find the desired information from the site, particularly if they're viewing your site from a non-Flash compatible device, although flash multimedia and graphics may appear enticing.

Focusing on your target audience is important even for website design. If you're designing a site in order to sell winter coats, you're not exactly going to have a beach themed background with Joe Strummer tunes playing upon entry, for instance. Keep your site closely related to its targeted audience.

A good resource where you can learn some insightful knowledge is a book store. You can go to a bookstore and read books that have information on html, c+, photoshop, and dreamweaver as these are some of the key things you need to learn when it comes to being a well- knowledgable web designer.

Selecting a professional looking font is an important web design consideration. If a site looks professional by looking at the fonts, you can see. Some fonts, such as comic sans, are ones that you want to stay away from. A font can be subset to the default font on your user's computer if they don't have it. This often looks terrible.

To help you plan ahead, you want to make a visual sitemap. This can give you an idea of where you want to go in the future. With a visual sitemap, you will see exactly how your structure is developing. This will allow you to hone in on anything that needs some tinkering. Alternatively, perhaps something that you have completely overlooked. Experts agree that a good visual representation is essential for creating a quality site.

Tools for your visitors to use should be user friendly and consistent. Keep text that is underlined clickable. Your visitors will stay on your site longer as well as return for more info at a later date if you do these things.

If your site has a logo, you want to be sure that when you click it you go right to your homepage. This type of clickable logo has become a standard expectation from most Internet users. It's frustrating to click on a logo and have nothing happen, and this saves you from adding a 'home' link. Having a logo that is clickable will make site navigation easier.

With the amount of time that your visitors likely spend on social networking sites, it makes sense to add links to your site to let them share your content on their favorite social sites. You will gain valuable visitors to your site, as well as increased awareness of what you have to offer.

Make good use of "white space." Although not always white, it is merely a blank space within a web page. Designing web pages with a how viewers would see your site is key, therefore you don't want to clutter your website with lots of pictures and text. White space allows visitors to easily scan your pages and feel comfortable on your site.

Obviously the tips above don't cover every single aspect of web design. You will have to research further if there is more you need to know about the subject. As you can see, though, the tips provided here will help you get and stay on the right path. Use these tips wisely to build a great site.
